Wound specialists treat a variety of conditions, including:
- Chronic wounds: Wounds that have not healed with other treatments, such as diabetic foot ulcers, pressure ulcers, and gangrene
- Infected or malignant wounds: Wounds that are infected or malignant, such as human or animal bites, or wounds that occur after cancer treatments
- Post-operative wounds: Wounds that occur after surgery, such as post-operative complicated wounds
- Pressure ulcers: Also known as bed sores, pressure ulcers are damaged skin and tissue that occur when the skin doesn't get enough blood flow
- Burns: Burns are a common wound condition that wound specialists treat
- Other wounds: Other wounds that wound specialists treat include traumatic injuries, venous leg ulcers, sickle-cell ulcers, and arterial wounds
Some wounds can be treated at home, but you should see a doctor if:
- The wound is deeper than 1/2 inch
- Bleeding doesn't stop with direct pressure
- Bleeding lasts longer than 20 minutes
- Bleeding is the result of a serious accident
- The wound is from an animal or human bite
- There is a serious puncture wound
- An object is still stuck in the wound
